Hanging Works in Pairs

One work on a wall is a statement. Two works hung well are a sentence. The difference between a pair that reads as one thought and a pair that reads as indecision comes down to three choices: what shares the wall, how far apart, and which work leads.

What can share a wall

Pairs work when the works share a family and differ in voice. Same palette, different composition. Same subject, different register. Two identical moods side by side cancel each other out; two unrelated works compete.

Some works in the archive were made for this. The two Symbiotic Relationship squares were painted as companions, fire and earth beside water and air, and hang the way they were made: side by side, level, with room to breathe. The three Spring paintings were painted across the same months and carry each other's colours in their edges. Any two of them pair; all three make a wall of one season.

The spacing rule

8 to 10cm between frames, at every size. Closer and the works merge into one crowded object. Further and the eye stops reading them together. Hang level with each other, centres at 145 to 150cm from the floor, and treat the pair as one shape when centring it on the wall.

Format pairings that work

Two squares, level: the calmest pairing there is. One vertical with one square: the vertical leads, the square anchors. Vertical beside vertical works in a hallway where the wall itself is narrow. The pairing to avoid is two horizontals stacked, which reads as a shelf.

Let one work lead

Every good pair has a hierarchy. The leading work is the one you would keep if the wall could only hold one. Hang it at the position the eye finds first, usually the left for a wall approached head-on, the near side for a wall approached along a corridor. The second work agrees with it, extends it, or answers it quietly.
